All -

How do you handle backups of your various virtual machines? With one major exception - VMware - we are very Microsoft-centric. Windows, Exchange 2007/2010, SharePoint 2007/2010 and SQL Server.

We're deploying a new backup solution - Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2010 - and intend to use agents based in each VM to do the backup.

Obviously, there are hypervisor-focused options out there, but we're skipping those for now.

What about you? How do you handle backup in your environment?

At various sites, I've used everything from backup agents within the VMs to scripted snapshot/copy/compress backups of VM directories to volume-level snaps on the storage side.  From a VM guy point of view, agents within the VMs are the easiest for me since it takes the backup responsibility off my shoulders

That said, any kind of backup that let's me retrieve a full .vmdk to extract data is probably the most useful to me.

PS: I hate backups...

I was using DPM2007 and the backups where done from the VMs itself...
Now we are backing up with CA ArcServ with agent in every VM that is production level.

Agreed on the hating backups thing. It's the one thing that we absolutely have to do that we hope we never have to use.

When I decided to go DPM 2010 and stay with VM-based backups (in each VM), I was wondering if I was just a dinosaur, but it looks like I'm in good company!

Ariel,

What did you think of DPM? Was it a product shortcoming that pushed you to Arcserve?

DPM2007 was fine... but we are half UNIX/Linux and have a lot of services running on Debian that needs backup.

My Boss make the decision to buy ARCServ.. we are happy with it, and now i`m not in charge of backup, that's the better part!! :)

We had talked about DPM a while back... we just made the migration to DPM 2010 and I love it! It's been a great tool for us so far.

We too recently migrated to DPM 2010 and really happy by using new features like Exchange 2010 DAG grouping and D2T features..

Have you started to look at the new features coming in DPM 2012? It looks like it's going to be pretty awesome!
