Hello all I have a question on what the best way to P2V a physical server and reuse it as an ESXi host. Right now my client has one ML350 G6 hosting Windows Small Business Server 2003. Due to the increasing amount of spam they are receiving I plan on deploying Symantec Bightmail but they do not want to purchase a new server system with their current server being underutilized. I have deployed ESX and ESXi in the past and have done many P2V's but never with just 1 server.

Ultimately my plan (if it will work) would be to use the VMware Converter tool to convert the physical box to a VMware workstation image then reload the server with ESXi--does this sound like it will work or will I need to temporarily provide a 2nd server to P2V then move the converted machine back to the other server after it has been re-provisioned as an ESXi host?

thanks in advance,

Kirk

I was on a similar situation sometime ago... i just make a Acronis image of the server and later using converter i passed it to the ESXi host.

So converter will recognize the Acronis format (.tib I think) and is able to load the necessary drivers upon restore?

Acronis is a good option as has been discussed.

My main concern would be wondering how mission-critical this system is. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to this kind of stuff and like your temporary second server option to which you could temporarily P2V the existing machine and actually mske sure nothing goes wrong before you blow away the physical system.

Just my 2 cents!

Scott is 100% right... it depends on how critical that server is.. in my case the server in question was a SharePoint going from testing to production, and i never touch the physical one.

Kirk,

What did you decide to do to solve your P2V challenge? Did you go the Acronis route or did you opt for a second server P2V solution?

What were your results? We'd love to hear back!

Apropos Acronis and converting to esxi.

Is it possible to do a acronis "full backup" and later an incremental one and use this 2 files (full and incremental = latest stat) as a source for the convertion to esxi?
