Recently, I had the privilege to participate in a Veeam podcast on the topic of the newly released V-index. The V-index, sponsored by Veeam and carried out by Vansom Bourne, aims to capture three very relevant metrics on an ongoing basis:

Virtualization rate. The percentage of servers/workloads in an organization that is virtualized.
Consolidation ratio. The average number of virtual workloads per physical host.
Primary hypervisor in use. Hyper-V, Citrix or VMware?

Vansom Bourne has consolidated responses from more than 500 valid respondents and will do so on a regular basis. This will provide invaluable information that will help organization gauge their own progress when it comes to virtualization, which is quickly moving toward the 50% mark (which will make it the norm!)

As of the first publication, V-index shows a 39.4% virtualization penetration rate, and an average consolidation ratio of 6:1. When it comes to the hypervisor race, VMware leads the pack with 58.2% of market share followed by Citrix with 20.2% and Microsoft’s Hyper-V with 18.6%. It will be interesting to see of VMware’s recent license adjustments move these numbers at all.

I love the concept of V-index and look forward to seeing ongoing trend lines that will really help organizations gauge with consistent data their progress and market trends.

Your Hyper-V host resources should be dedicated to run a Virtual Machine. If you install and run other services such as SQL Server or Exchange on the host, they will not only consume resource but will also make troubleshooting more difficult.

Hyper-V

We can use a virtualized computing environment to improve the efficiency of our computing resources. This is possible because we use Hyper V to create and manage virtual machines and their resources.

VMware is more "advance" than the other hypervisor vendors but it is expansive and we do not need the full feature that VMware support in the data center.

With limited budget, Microsoft and Citrix is a good alternative.

Yeah, the idea of v-index is a good one.

As per my opinion virtualization can also help IT divisions and spend less time on routine administrative tasks, it also enabling them to be more responsive to their business needs

Agreed. And any time you can save time on routine administrative tasks, you can redirect resources to more value-add IT tasks. Never a bad thing!
