Each edition of Windows - Standard, Enterprise, Data Center and the standalone Hyper-V server - carries with it different feature capabilities. For example, if you decide to run Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition, did you know that you cannot use VDI, Clustering or Live Migration? These features are allowed only with the other editions of Windows.

Microsft has made available a handy high-level matrix that outlines for you exactly what features you will enjoy with each edition of Windows. With this information in hand, you can make a better business decision around which edition of Windows you need to meet your goals.

I should also remind you to not ignore Microsoft’s licensing options for virtualized environments.
