macdip -> ESXi 4.0 unable to make Guest OS 64bit (10.Jul.2010 9:49:38 AM)

Hello,

I am newbie to VMWare. I have installed VMWare ESXi 4.0 on Intel SE7520AF20 with 2 XEON 3.4 GHz Processors and 16 GB RAM. Bios is enabled for Hyper Threading.
When I try to load Red Hat 5.0 64bit OR Windows 2008 R2 64 bit it fails. It says your CPU is not compatible.
On other hand on the same machine as a native OS both Linux and Windows 64 bit gets installed successfully.

Thank you in advance,
Mac

Is that CPU VT-d and VT-x capable ? if not you cant run 64bit VM.

But isn't ESXi 4.0 it self only runs on 64 bit? and as I have mentioned I can install 64 bit Windows or Linux as stand alon system on same hardware without any issue.

Is a requirement to have Virtualization Technology on both VMware and Hyper-V and even on Workstations.

I am sorry but did not get what you are asking...[:-]

What exact model of processor do you have in your computer? Although ESXi itself may have loaded without any problems, any 64-bit guest virtual machines that you may be running require a processor that supports VT - hardware-based virtualization extensions. Without that support, your 64-bit virtual machine will not run even though you were able to install ESXi.

Thanks for all your replies. I have found out that my Processor is Xeon 3400DP SL7HJ that seems to be not VT supported. :-(

that's the case, without VT theres no 64bit VM. I have 2 Opteron box that one is able to run 64bit VM but the other no. with Opteron there are some revisions that are able to run 64bit VM.

hope that you can update that box with some VT-enable Xeon....

Macdip -

That's a real bummer. If you need a new server, I'm a huge believer in Dell's outlet/refurb store. You can get some nice servers there for pretty good money.
