I had an issue with ESXi 4.1 and vCenter 4.1 the other day where the NFS datastores that some VMs reside on became unavailable due to a networking issue between the switches and the NetApp filer heads.  To be fair, there were iSCSI LUNs mapped as well but nothing was using them.  I was able to create the NFS connections and the datastores appeared up, but when trying to access them the latency was in the 5-10 minute range.

The problem I ran into was that when I tried to restart an ESXi host, it was unable to re-join vCenter when it came back up.  The host was up and I could access it directly, but it timed out logging back into vCenter and threw a vmodl.fault.HostCommunication error, leaving the hosts "disconnected" within vCenter.

Once the networking issue was resolved and the storage was accessible once again, the hosts where able to re-join vCenter with no errors.

Now, I wasn't aware that the host to vCenter login process was reliant upon datastore connectivity...?  Can anyone clear up why exactly that would happen?  My best guess is that vCenter wanted to enumerate the VMs and information about them but was unable to, so the whole process timed out.
