pcsql -> Can Hyper-V and VMware vSphere Hypervisor be installed on same machine? (21.Mar.2011 3:54:58 PM)

I'm quite new to virtualization. I have already installed Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. I have no experience in VMware. I wonder whether I need another machine to try VMware vSphere Hypervisor or I can install it on the machine which has Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. If both hypervisors can be installed on same machine, how to switch between them? can both of them be active at the same time?

pcsql -

I'm sure you know that running one hypervisor inside another for production use - if it worked at all - would be an unsupported scenario.  That said, it sounds more like you're trying to learn vSphere rather than run something in production.

For running ESX under Hyper-V, it may work under vSphere.  vSphere 4.0 added support for IDE so you can install and run vSphere by booting it from an IDE device, which is what Hyper-V supports.  I doubt you'll be able to run many - if any - virtual machines since VT extensions aren't passed through the Hyper-V hypervisor, but if you just wanted and ESX box to play with, I'd give it a shot and see what happens.  You MIGHT get away with installing a 32-bit VM under the virtualized ESX instance, but I'm not sure.

Give it a shot!  If it works (or, if it doesn't), I'd love to hear more about your experience.

Scott
